Schinegger won the 1966 World Championship for women's downhill in skiing.
Amidst concerns that Eastern Bloc nations were disguising male athletes to
compete as females, the 1968 Winter Olympics marked the first occurrence of
gender testing for athletes. Schinegger, raised as a girl, was stunned when
test results from her saliva revealed she was intersex with chromosomes.
Barred from competing in the Games, Schinegger began a hormone regimen,
underwent surgery and began living his life as "Erik". He later
trained for the 1972 Games but was denied a spot on the Austrian National
Men's Ski Team#theunsungheroines
