As most of you know I try and keep BUTCHHISTORY pre-1990 to showcase women whose faces and names have been buried in library and college archives. However today I am inspired to illustrate a current historic moment. Jen Welter has just made history. She was hired by the Arizona Cardinals and is thought to be the first ever female coach in America’s National Football League (NFL). Welter was appointed as a linebacker coach by Cardinals’ head coach Bruce Arians – the first male coach to break the NFL’s gender barrier. Arians said: “Coaching is nothing more than teaching. One thing I have learned from players is ‘How are you going to make me better? If you can make me better, I don’t care if you’re the Green Hornet, I’ll listen.’”#butchhistory
